How to Quickly Align Shapes in Your Drawing (Visio 2007)

Drawing with precision takes a lot of effort and time, but this is usually necessary when you want to create a good quality professional diagram. Thankfully, Visio has an excellent feature that enables you to quickly align your shapes horizontally or vertically.

Align Shapes Horizontally

Look at the shapes below. Not a pretty sight, isn’t it? Let’s fix it!

1.  Select all the shapes in the diagram. Now, do you notice that one of the shapes has a thick, pink border line to it?

Well, this simply means that this shape is the primary shape among the five of them. So, the rest of the shapes will align accordingly with the primary one.

2.  Click the Shape menu and select Align Shapes.

3.  The Align Shapes dialog box appears. There are three options for you to select under the Horizontal alignment section, i.e. align the shapes to the left, middle or right. In this example, select the middle one and click the OK button.

Decide the Primary Shape

Wait a minute! You may want to decide which shape is the primary shape that the rest will follow instead of following the primary shape that Visio chose for you. Let’s just say, you want the bottom shape to be primary.

1.  Click on the bottom shape to select it first.
